BANAT

Placed among the Meridional Carpathians mountains, the Danube, the Tisa and the Mures rivers, BANAT historical province has as main towns Timisoara (population 336.000 in 2006), Resita (84.000), Caransebes (29.000), Lugoj (47.000) and Orsova (21.000).
Two European capitals are nearby, Belgrade, 170 km away from Timisoara, and the Hungarian capital Budapest, 300 km away. The distance between Vienna and Timisoara is the same as between Timisoara and Bucharest, that is 550 km. Timis is the largest county in Romania, covering 8,697 square km.
The relief is composed of a mountain area in the east and south (a part of the Poiana Rusca, Tarcu, Godeanu, Mehedinti Mountains and Almajului and Semenic Mountains) covered by large forests and pastures and a meadow area in the centre (the west part of the area of the Tisa plain). The climate of the region is milder than in the influences of the mediterranean climate are obvious; for instance, there grows the wild lilac.
The capital of the county, TIMISOARA (called "Little Vienna"), is the fourth city in size in Romania, an important historic, economic, financial, cultural and scientific center, the true gateway of Romania to Western Europe.

The city is also called "Little Vienna", because it belonged for a very long time to the Habsburg Empire and the entire city center consists of buildings built in the Kaiser era, which reminds one much of the old Vienna. Timişoara is an important university center with the emphasis on subjects like medicine, mechanics and electro-technology. An industrial city with extensive services, it was the first European city to be lit by electric street lamps in 1884. It was also the second European and the first city in what is now Romania with horse drawn trams in 1867. There are numerous claims that Gustave Eiffel, the creator of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, built one of Timişoara’s footbridges over the Bega. Numerous bars, clubs and restaurants have opened in the old center in the fine old baroque square.

The history of the area is visible in the large number of important monuments and vestiges of a great national and European value: the Huniad Castle, the Mansion of Eugenio of Savoy, the Dicasterial Palace, the Bastion of the old city of Timisoara, the Church of the Minorite Monastery, the Post Inn, St. Nicholas Tower, the Sephardic Synagogue (in Lugoj), the Ciacova Fortress, the Royal Castle in Banloc, the Tapae Monument (a small column raised in the honor of the emperor Trajan), the Natural Park in Bazos, the Natural Reserve in Satchinez, the ancient forests in Pischia, Binis, Hodos-Remetea Mica, Cheveresu Mare with a rich fauna, the natural mineral water springs in Buzias, Calacea or Ivanda (compared by experts to those in Evian and Karlovy), the artificial lake in Surduc, the cave in Romanesti etc, etc…
All these are just a few of the tourist attractions in BANAT. Its beautiful villages in the plains, with hospitable people and sweet wines in Recas, Buzias, as well as the plum or apricot fire-water, are just enough reasons for the people to spend their week-ends or holidays in this region.
BANAT is an area with various oare deposits and thermal (Herculane Baths) or cold (Buzias, Lipova) mineral springs, as well as with the greatest marble exploiting in the country (Ruschita).
